UNDER THE WEATHER

FROM 16th NOVEMBER
During the days when ships were powered by sail, the captains log documented everything that happened during the day. As sickness could spread rapidly on a ship, there were often times where the number of sailors that were ill exceeded the space provided in the log to record their names. During these times, the excess names of the sick were recorded in the next column, which was reserved for the weather conditions of the day. Thus, it was not unusual for an ill sailor to be listed "under the weather". Nowadays we use the term when we fell "a bit out of sorts" or "not feeling 100%" but if we take it literally, the weather itself can also affect how we feel, from bright spring or summer days to the rain of gloomy autumn days and cold of snowy landscapes. This exhibition explores all of this and more. Artists give freedom to interpret the term "Under the Weather". Open Monday to Saturday 10am - 4pm - call 01744 22766 for more information.
